Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative
The overall goal of the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI) is to improve the health status of First Nations individuals, families and communities through actions aimed at reducing prevalence and incidence of diabetes and its risk factors.
What We
Offer

Health Monitoring
Community members with or at risk of diabetes can either self-monitor and/or consult with our nurse to learn what to do when your results are too high or low. A variety of home monitoring devices are available through a physician referral/prescription.

Health Education
Our Community Health Nurse and Representative coordinate various drop-ins, workshops, clinics, and information sessions that promote diabetes prevention, intervention and support throughout the year.

Healthy Eating
Our Health Care Cook plans and prepares healthy, budget friendly meals for our clients living with or at risk of diabetes. We also host weekly Elders Social Club, Elders Luncheons and a Meals On Wheels program.

Health Screening
Patients who are diagnosed with diabetes in Glen Vowell can come into the Health Centre and get blood sugar levels monitored and assessed by our Community Health Nurse or our Licensed Practical Nurse.

Physical Activity
Our team is available to transport clients to the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre in Hazelton to participate in a wide variety of programs that promotes active living and personal wellness.

Food Security
Our Maternal Child Health Advocate and Community Health Representative jointly coordinate a quarterly Good Food Box program, where parents of children under 7 and people diagnosed with diabetes can access fresh fruits and vegetables.
