Sik-E-Dakh Health Society Partners with University of Victoria for Heart Health Program in Glen Vowell

We’re proud to announce a partnership between the Sik-E-Dakh Health Society and the University of Victoria to bring a Heart Health Program to Glen Vowell, serving communities throughout the northwest region of British Columbia. This program is focused on addressing Inherited Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), a potentially life-threatening heart condition that is significantly more common in First Nations populations in our region.

LQTS, which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, is usually rare but occurs at a much higher rate—about 1 in 125—among Northern BC First Nations due to a specific genetic mutation known as V205M. While some individuals with this mutation experience serious health impacts, others live symptom-free, highlighting the need for further study.

So far, over 800 participants have been enrolled in the ongoing research, with more than 100 individuals identified as carrying the V205M mutation. Additional genetic variants have also been discovered that may influence the severity of LQTS. The program aims to better understand how these genetic factors—alone or in combination with other health conditions—impact heart health over a lifetime, with the ultimate goal of reducing risk and improving outcomes.
